A private commission for a gate to front a modernist style property on Shoreham Beach, West Sussex.
The brief was to link the geometry of the building with the beach. Tall grasses grow on the beach, moving in the wind and catching the sun. A large part of the beach is SSSI. The drawn qualities in research sketches of the grasses were translated into the metal using simple forging, twisting and bending techniques.
The work is shown in the studio during construction and prior to finishing, the final galvanised finish reflects the palette of colours local to the site and the glitter of the sun on the sea and the seed heads.
Forged, welded and galvanised steel. H. 90cm, W. 250cm.app. 2003.
